Unheard Voices: Sexually Intimate Relations of Women in Guangzhou, China, and Relationship to Cults

Doni P. Whitsett, Helen Land, Yuxin Pei, and Devon Brooks

Abstract

This article describes a qualitative study conducted in Guangzhou, China with English-speaking women regarding their attitudes and behaviors about relationships, including sexuality. Two major themes emerged: monogamy and patriarchy with several sub-themes under each. Findings reflect transitions in intimate relationships, gender roles, and sexuality among this sample of Chinese women since China’s Open Door policy. Relevance and connection to cults and coercive control are discussed and avenues of further inquiry are explored.
